  • April 2023: Opterro and Griot Group launched their business partnership for distribution of Opterro’s products and solutions in Western United States covering Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada.
  • March 2023: Opterro and Soliton launched their business partnership for distribution of Opterro’s products and solutions in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

  • November 2022: A repeat customer of Opterro purchased FyberSpace™ distributed fiber-optic sensing arrays for its field-deployed Opterro interrogator system. These distributed FBG fiber-optic arrays and the UltraSense™ interrogator system are used for defense applications.

The technological foundation for Opterro began in the 1980s with the initiative of two world-famous Stanford professors and one of their brightest graduate researchers at the time. More than 50 patents later, Opterro’s light shines today stronger than ever with its industry leading portfolio of modular, plug & play commercial solutions.

Opterro’s family of distributed fiber-optic sensing products with onboard and cloud-based intelligent analytics has been recognized as Finalist for the Best of Sensors Award for 2021. This award highlights cutting-edge advancements and achievements that are moving the sensors industry forward. 

Best of Sensors 2020 Award for i*Sense® Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing Solutions

Opterro was recognized as winner of the “Best of Sensors 2020 Award for i*Sense® distributed fiber-optic sensing interrogators” in November 2020. We were awarded the Most Innovative Product in the Data Acquisition & Analytics category of the Best of Sensors Awards 2020, which honors winners in 11 product categories. “Entries were judged and winners selected on the basis of value to the marketplace, uniqueness of the design, and the impact (i.e., the bigness of the problems solved or issued addressed).” The i*Sense® product family, offered by Opterro, Inc. is an integrated and scalable temperature and strain sensing system consisting of multiplexed Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors on an optical fiber and an ultra-fast interrogator unit with advanced all-optical processing, electronics, algorithmic software, and data analytics layers from DC to 1.3 MS/s and beyond for distributed photonic sensing in structural health monitoring, NDE, acoustic emission, and other advanced multisensor sensing applications.

Patents

Opterro’s solutions are based on a comprehensive, expanding portfolio of over 50 issued patents and patent applications created at our sister company IFOS and licensed to Opterro. The strong IP portfolio includes its enabling technologies such as: (i) massively-parallel Photonic Spectral Processor (PSP), (ii) optical channel interleaving for dense spectral coverage, as well as (iii) sensor systems applicable across multiple industrial markets and applications.

Moreover, Opterro’s solutions benefit from a rich library of trade secrets covering a wide range of hardware, firmware, and software technologies and know-how, including: sensor design, fabrication, calibration, and deployment; digital signal processing for challenging measurements, and intelligent algorithms implemented in the interrogators’ algorithmic application-specific software to convert data into insight enabling decision aid.

President, CEO, and Co-Founder

Mehrdad has served as President & Chief Commercial Officer, IFOS, a pioneer of photonic sensing solutions, and Founder & CEO, of Sigmagen, Inc. He received his MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and has extensive experience in the instrumentation, semiconductor technology, micro/nano-electronics, internet, renewable energy, and data storage industries. He co-led and enabled creation of the world’s first agile semiconductor factory at TI, and several technology startups with liquidity events. He has a proven track record of delivering enabling technologies, products, and services across multiple industries. Mehrdad is a Fellow of IEEE and has over 250 patents in his name.

Co-Founder and Board Member

Behzad has led extensive R&D and commercialization activities on photonic sensing systems, advanced signal processing, and fiber-optic sensing technologies. He founded IFOS and is its CEO/CTO, where his focus is on applied R&D in development and applications of photonic sensors. Prior to founding IFOS, he held technology leadership positions in Litton Systems, Optivision, and Physical Optics Corp. He has published over 80 scientific papers and is the inventor of more than 20 U.S. patents. Behzad is a Senior Member of IEEE, SPIE, and OSA, and is a member of AWEA and ION. He holds a PhD and MS in Electrical Engineering, and an MS in Applied Physics, all from Stanford University.

Board Member

Ferey is a partner at Newport LLC, a CEO advisory firm. He has a track record of accelerating value in high-tech companies. He brings a unique combination of expertise to help companies with sophisticated technologies to deliver their mission of growth and exit. A serial CEO, he started his career developing products at Schlumberger, switching to Fortune 500 corporate innovation management and corporate strategy consulting before progressing to middle market investment banking and ultimately principal investing in a $2B PE and a $100M VC fund. Ferey earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from University College, London, and an MBA in finance and strategy from Cambridge University.

Board Member

Taher is world-renowned information security leader and cryptographer. Taher has served as CISO, Chief Scientist, CTO, founder, and CEO of numerous organizations. He invented the DSS standard for digital signatures and is recognized as the “father” of SSL. He invented the ElGamal discrete log cryptosystem and the ElGamal signature scheme. He is a co-founder of NokNok Labs and InfoSec Global, and serves as a director of Vindicia, Zix. and Bay Dynamics. He has served as an advisor to Cyphort, Bitglass, Onset Ventures, Glenbrook Partners, PGP, Arcot Systems, Finjan, Actiance, Symplified, Zetta, SecureMisr, and Axway. Dr. Elgamal earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and is the CTO of Salesforce.
